• Form a relationship. Before approaching a neighbor to complain, form a relationship with her. Bring her a plate of cookies, ask if she’d like to grab coffee, or offer to collect her mail when she’s away. When you have a good relationship with her, she’ll be more likely to respect your wishes.
• Offer a solution. Explain to your neighbor why you need quiet time, and then offer a solution. For example, you could say, “I have to work early in the morning, and your loud music has been keeping me up. If we could agree that you will turn your music off at 10 p.m. every night that would be great!” This will get better results than, “You are so loud! Knock it off!”
• Go through the landlord. If you’re not getting results through a face to face, try talking to your landlord. Keep in mind that your landlord may not prioritize your complaint, so you may have to have a few conversations. Keep it professional – the landlord will be more likely to respect your concerns.
• Get the police involved. Only call the police if all other options have been exhausted and the noise is disrupting your everyday life. You don’t want to upset your neighbor and have her cause more of a problem for you!
