  • Prepare a list of questions before the interview. Start with generic questions, like “Tell me about yourself” and “What attracted you to this line of work?” Then move on to questions that stem from the job the person has applied for, like questions about experience with machinery or software you use in your business.
  • Pay attention to the details. When the interviewee arrives, note whether he is on time. Also pay attention to how he is dressed. Don’t be overly picky, but note whether he is dressed professionally.
  • Make it a conversation. Don’t treat the interview as an interrogation! You want the interviewee to be comfortable – that’s when you’ll best get an understanding of how good of a match he will be.
  • Ask a few stressful questions. Yes, you want the interviewee to be comfortable, but you also want to see how he responds to pressure. Ask about gaps in employment history, criticisms of past work, or strengths and weaknesses.
  • Give the prospect a chance to ask questions. Every person you interview should have questions about the job. Note whether these questions are more about vacations and benefits or the nature of the work itself.
  • Follow up. We’ve all gone to interviews and never heard back from the company. Be kind and send a quick email to the applicant to let him know if you’re still deciding between employees or if you’ve decided to go with someone else. No one wants to be left hanging!

Running an interview is almost as stressful as being interviewed, but with the right tips you’ll be able to hire someone who is a perfect match for your company! To protect your business, invest in Ohio business insurance today!
