Store gasoline in proper containers:  Make sure you are only using approved containers to store your gasoline.  Check the condition of the containers and make sure they still seal tightly and are not corroding.

Make sure to have smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your garage:  Your garage is full of hazardous chemicals.  Having these detectors will ensure proper warning in the event of a fire or unsafe levels of carbon monoxide.

Keep your tools organized and secure:  All power tools should be unplugged and properly stored away.  Ladders should be stored horizontally and not upright to avoid tipping over.  Keep gardening tools in a place where they cannot fall over or be stepped on.  Keep extension cords coiled and free of knots.

Look around at the garage structure itself.  Is it safe?  Check for moisture coming in through the corners or from the ceiling.  Make sure the roof is in good shape.  Ensure there is proper ventilation.  Keep windows covered to avoid theft of items stored in your garage.

Additional tips if you have children:  Aside from the above, there are additional precautionary measures if you have children or children who visit.  Lock all poisonous substances and keep out of reach.  Keep gasoline storage containers out of sight.  Know the ins and outs of your automatic garage door.  Make sure it is inspected and maintained on a regular basis, and know how to disengage the automatic mechanism in case of an emergency.

Check to make sure you have the necessary Ohio Homeowners insurance coverage to protect against fire and your belongings.  Make sure your hobby cars are protected too!
